DHS PTA November College Essay Reader Program

A clear and compelling college essay is an important part of the application process, and the College Essay Reader Program is made up of parents and community members who are here to give constructive feedback for those students who would like additional adult review.

Student essays should share new information that cannot be found elsewhere on the application. The most successful essays will showcase student voice, opinions, goals, and values.

PTA volunteers will NOT write nor negatively critique essays, but instead will provide revision recommendations and feedback.

How it works:

Students are invited to fill out the google form to request help with college application essays using this link https://forms.gle/pwtBCd2F8mhCAUFJ9

Once a google doc  link has been submitted, volunteers will enter their editorial suggestions using Google’s suggesting mode.  Every essay will be read by two volunteers. Students may accept or decline all edits. Volunteers will focus their suggestions to provide feedback on content and word count. Students should resubmit the request form if they would like additional feedback. Depending on volunteer availability and volume of student requests, it may be possible for a PTA volunteer to review a subsequent draft.

This program is not affiliated with DHS teachers or staff and is intended to offer support to students who are seeking additional help outside of school hours and instruction.  PTA does not guarantee that participation in the program will result in acceptance to college.  While we will respect the confidentiality of information shared in the essays and PTA volunteers are not mandated reporters, we may share information related to physical or mental health with DHS counselors if a volunteer has concerns about student safety.

The program will officially begin on November 1, 2023. - essays may be submitted using the above form prior to this time, however, readers will not provide feedback until after this date, and will continue providing feedback to essays submitted until November 30, 2023.

Please contact dhsptacollegeessayhelp@gmail.com with any questions.

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2023-24 school year at Davis Senior High School! The DHS PTA is excited to partner with parents, teachers, and staff to make this a successful school year for our kids and the DHS community.

Our mission is to promote the welfare of students and our school community; and to support the collaboration of teachers, parents, and staff to create a more successful, inclusive, equitable, and nurturing school environment for all. We run on the hard work of a few dedicated volunteers, so please get involved where you can!

JOIN THE PTA: Become a member of the DHS PTA by filling out the membership form on our website at DHS PTA website and paying a $15 membership fee. This will allow you to vote at PTA meetings. Please also encourage friends and family members to join as well.

Be sure to attend PTA meetings to meet other parents, establish relationships with administrators and staff, and learn more about the DHS community. Our next meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 7, 2023 at 7pm in the DHS library. Stay tuned for more information.

DONATE TO THE PTA: Our annual budget is donation-based and depends entirely on your support. We ask every family who is able to make a direct donation to support your student(s) and our school. A suggested donation of $200 per family will help fund all of the wonderful opportunities the PTA provides for students, teachers, and staff. ANY amount is welcome and appreciated! Funds support programs such as Partners in Education (PIE) grants for teachers to help with needs in their classrooms and student clubs, teacher appreciation/hospitality, and PTA scholarships.

Our budget also contributes to friendship day, the athletics and counseling departments, the Davis Parent University, and so much more. In the 2022-2023 school year PTA funded over $22,000 in programs for students, teachers, and the school community. These initiatives support nearly 1,800 students and 100 staff members! We are really grateful to be able to support all of these important programs because of your donation. Donate any time on the PTA website.

GET INVOLVED: The PTA is always looking for volunteers. Be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities sent via our email list throughout the year. Volunteering with the PTA is a fun and fulfilling way to get involved with the DHS community and make a difference.

STAY INFORMED: The best way to stay up to date on everything PTA related is to subscribe to the PTA email list. You can also subscribe to the daily DHS bulletin. You can sign up for the PTA email list and daily bulletin on the PTA website under communications.  The best place for further information about the DHS community is through the school newspaper, The Blue Devil HUB and the DHS news show, The Brakedown.

I have been involved with PTA for over 12 years in several positions and served as PTA president at Willett Elementary and Emerson Junior High School.  I have a Sophomore and Senior this year, and I’m looking forward to working with an awesome PTA board and all of you to help serve the DHS community.

If you have any questions or would like to get involved please contact presidentdhspta@gmail.com.
